In
February 1998, Vodafone Group, showed interest in
acquiring their first GSM license in the Middle East
and North Africa Region.Vodafone Group chose to invest
its experience and resources in the Egyptian
telecommunicationsmarket as it hosted the most
prominent telecommunications environment in the
region.In 1998, the Vodafone Group aligned its
interests with a consortium of international and
Egyptian investors through a Joint Venture Agreement
The consortium won its bid for the second 15-year GSM
license in Egypt in May 1998 with a bid of LE 1.75
billion.
Since then,Vodafone Egypt has invested over LE 4.5
billion in the construction of its existing
network.The Company has grown rapidly to its current
customer base of over 7 million customers and over LE
5.9 billion in revenues.This success has been built on
the Company's network superiority,excellence in
customer service, and leadership in innovation,
focused strategy,and our majority shareholder Vodafone
Group.
Since its inception in May 1998,Vodafone Egypt has
drawn on the global strength and innovative products
of the Vodafone Group for the introduction of new
services in the Egyptian mobile telecommunications
market.These pioneering services include pre-paid
lines, Short-Message-Service ("SMS"), Dual
SIM,Wireless Fax and E-mail, and IVR and recently GPRS
coverage nationwide, balance transfer and mobile
government.
In March 2003 Vodafone Egypt was the first major
telecom operator in Egypt to launch a GPRS network,
which is the technology backbone that enabled the
launch of the unique, worldwide experience that is
"Vodafone live!". A further addition to
Vodafone Egypt's basket of innovative corporate
products, 'Mobile Office from Vodafone', which
utilizes GPRS technology to fundamentally re-engineer
mobile business communications, was introduced in May
2003.
Vodafone Egypt network covers 98% of the populated
areas. As a result, our customers enjoy superior
service in more than 200 urban areas, as well as
villages, coastal areas, tourist resorts and 100 major
highways throughout the Delta, North Coast, Red Sea
and Upper Egypt.
We also have roaming agreements with more than 370
roaming partners from over 130 countries. We offer
roaming services to our prepaid subscribers, making it
possible to generate outgoing calls and messages as
well as receiving while traveling outside Egypt.
Vodafone customers are also able to enjoy the
preferential fixed roaming rate with Vodafone World.
